Praia, May 9 (Inforpress) – The play "Cabral, the Last Moon of a Big Man" by the Cape Verdean company Skinada and co-produced by the Portuguese Teatro Art’Imagem will open the Tanto Mar International Festival in Portugal.

A press release from the Sikinada theater company, to which Inforpress had access, indicates that the festival will take place on the 21st of this month, at 9:00 pm, at the Louletano cinema.

‘Cabral, a Última Lua de Homem Grande’ portrays the life of Amílcar Cabral, a key figure in Cape Verdean history, and marks the 50th anniversary of his death (2023), based on the novel of the same name by Mário Lúcio Sousa.

It also marks the 100th anniversary of Cabral's birth (2024) and the 50th anniversary of 25 April (2024).

Porto Inglês, 08 May (Inforpress) – About a month before the start of the Independence Cup, the Regional Football Association of the island of Maio has not yet made a decision on the island's participation in the tournament, Inforpress has learned.

The team has not yet been formed, nor has a coach been defined, while the other islands have already presented lists of pre-selected players and announced preparations for the competition, which marks 50 years of national independence.

Football on the island of Maio is going through a period marked by the island's absence from the main national sporting competitions, such as the national football championship and the Cabo Verde Cup, both currently underway.

The participation of Maio in the Independence Cup remains unknown, as the association ‘neither confirms nor denies’ the team's presence in the competition.

São Filipe, May 2 (Inforpress) – Today, the team from the Sanitation and Environment Service of the São Filipe City Council began collecting and removing tonnes of rubbish in the vicinity of the Presídio and Alto São Pedro at around 6 am.

After the end of the activities at the Presídio, which marked the end of the 2025 edition of the Day of the Municipality and the Bandeira festivities, the sanitation staff took to the streets to collect tonnes of rubbish, mostly bottles, cans, disposable cups, packaging, plastic and other types of rubbish left by the thousands of people who attended the cavalcade and the last night of the dance/festival at the Presídio

By 7 am the team had already gathered inside the Praça do Presidio and around the Caixa Económica, Alto São Pedro and the other streets near the main stages of the latest activities, as well as almost the entire lower part of the city most frequented during the festive period.

The waste collected will be transported in the municipality's solid urban waste collection vehicles to the inter-municipal landfill located near the Monte Genebra irrigated perimeter, more than ten kilometres south of the city of São Filipe.

Praia, 09 May (Inforpress) - The Bishop of the Diocese of Mindelo, Monsignor Ildo Fortes, said on Thursday he hoped that the American Cardinal Roberts Prevost, elected as the new Pope Leo XIV, could be an instrument of peace and reconciliation in today's world.

For Bishop Ildo Fortes, an apologist that it is the ‘Holy Spirit who leads the Church, through the actions’ of men too, his first impression was ‘extremely good’, and he emphasised the way Pope Francis' successor began by greeting everyone with the Peace of Christ.

Directly from Senegal, where he is attending the General Assembly of the Bishops of West Africa, the priest from Mindelo said that the name adopted, Leo XIV, is associated with that of Leo XIII who, in his view, as Pope at the beginning of the 20th century, ‘was a man of difficult times in the Church, with very dedicated messages for peace, for the world of workers, for politics.

“I hope that it will be an instrument of much reconciliation, peace and diplomacy in this world”, he highlighted, maintaining that Leo XIV presented himself in a very humble way, as he comes from a religious family, the Augustinians, explaining that Saint Augustine was an African Bishop.
