Mindelo, 18 December (Inforpress) – Today, the regional leader of UCID in São Vicente accused the Prime Minister of being complicit with the mayor in what he described as an “excessive act” of announcing five days of New Year celebrations on Rua de Lisboa.
Anilton Andrade, regional president of the Independent and Democratic Cape Verdean Union (UCID, opposition), said his party does not oppose the holding of New Year’s Eve celebrations, “understood as a single symbolic moment of hope and community unity”, provided they are organised with “sobriety, budgetary restraint and respect for the exceptional legal framework currently in force”.
“The decision was made public by the Mayor of São Vicente, [Augusto Neves], in the presence of the Prime Minister, [Ulisses Correia e Silva], which makes him complicit in this announcement, at a time when the island of São Vicente formally remains under a state of calamity,” he criticised.
He recalled that, due to Storm Erin, São Vicente remains under a state of calamity, which places additional obligations on public authorities, including local councils, to contain and rationalise expenditure, giving absolute priority to the protection of people, the restoration of essential living conditions, social assistance and reconstruction.
