Praia, Oct 24 (Inforpress) - The government said today that Cabo Verde is well on the way to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), although there is still a way to go before 2030 to eradicate extreme poverty.
Ulisses Correia e Silva expressed this satisfaction at the Convention Centre of the University of Cabo Verde, Uni-CV, while chairing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) fair, the central event of the United Nations Day celebrations, celebrated on 24 October, this year under the slogan ‘SDG 2030 - innovation and knowledge for a sustainable future’.
The head of government praised the positive assessment by international organisations of the steps taken by Cabo Verde, as he affirmed that the country is ‘in a good process’, which has been characterised by a ‘significant reduction’ compared to 2015.
We managed to increase our resilience to climate change, we have a strong program, we managed to reduce inequalities and create opportunities. We have positive indicators. We will have to continue working so that we have more economic growth, more conditions for job creation and a significant reduction in poverty and inequalities”, said Correia e Silva.
The prime minister pointed to the issue of employment as ‘one of the great challenges’, but said that the country is ‘on a good path’, given the reduction in employment, with the latest figures pointing, as he said, to an unemployment rate of 8.05 per cent (%) and making sure that extreme poverty is rooted out in a sustainable way and reducing absolute poverty.
Making Cabo Verde much more resilient to external shocks and vulnerability was listed by the head of the executive as a path in progress and ‘with some success’.
With the Sustainable Development Goals fair, the UN and Uni-CV intend to reinforce the ‘transformative role’ of academia, scientific thinking, technological innovation and knowledge production in the fulfilment of the SDGs set out in the 2030 Agenda.
