Praia, June 9 (Inforpress) – Experts warned today that broken political promises, social frustration, and a loss of faith in democratic institutions could pave the way for extremism and jeopardize the foundations of the Republic and the democratic rule of law.

The warning was issued by anthropologist Brito Semedo and professor Rui Tavares from the Nova University of Lisbon, shortly before the presentation of the panel ‘How a Republic is Lost’, part of the parallel program of the VII Cape Verdean Meeting of Portuguese Language, which is taking place at the Palmarejo Grande Campus in Praia.

In the panel discussion entitled “How a Republic is Lost”, led by the two speakers, both offer a comparative analysis of Portugal and Cabo Verde, examining the factors that led to the weakening of the First Portuguese Republic and the lessons that this historical experience can offer in addressing today’s democratic challenges.

In his speech, Brito Semedo proposed a reflection on the impacts of the establishment of the Republic in Cabo Verde and the expectations that the new regime generated among the Cape Verdean population, which at the time was marked by situations of hunger, abandonment, and exclusion.
