Praia, Jul 8 (Inforpress) - The leader of the PAICV municipal group acknowledged today that the basic sanitation situation in Praia ‘is not well’, and accused the opposition MpD group of using ‘defamatory manoeuvres to try to misinform public opinion’.
Aquiles Barbosa was speaking at a press conference to react to recent criticism from the Movement for Democracy (MpD), which expressed concern about the ‘disastrous performance’ of the current council team in the field of basic sanitation over the last five years.
The leader of the municipal group of the African Party for the Independence of Cabo Verde (PAICV) admitted that rubbish collection in the city is ‘not ideal’ and that the lorries available have not been able to meet the demands, but he refuted that it is as dramatic as they found it in 2020.
"We recognise that things aren't going well and we wouldn't want to be in this situation, there are challenges to overcome, and that's what this council is working towards," he said,

Praia, Jul 8 (Inforpress) - The average prices of maize 2nd, rice 1st, congo beans and cooking oil rose in the first quarter of 2025, compared to the previous quarter, Inforpress reported today.
These figures are from the Market Observatory published by the National Secretariat for Food and Nutrition Security of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
According to the Quarterly Analysis of National Prices, for the period January to March 2025, the average prices of basic food products (PAPN) showed a positive monthly average growth, with the exception of local maize and rice 2nd - a variety considered to be of lower quality than rice 1st, as it contains more broken grains and impurities.
On average, cereal and bean prices recorded monthly growth of 0.9% and 1.2%, respectively.

Mindelo, Jul 3 (Inforpress) - The Civic Association for the Enhancement of Matiota (ACVM) is organising a clean-up of the seaside resort's tank on Saturday as part of a day of citizenship to mark the 50th anniversary of Cabo Verde's independence.
This initiative was taken up by the president of the ACVM, António Pedro Silva, who explained to Inforpress that they are resuming a campaign that began in 2021 to valorise the space, located in the Chã de Alecrim area, next to the Cabnave shipyards, with years of history in the city of Mindelo.
According to the same source, all this time they have been waiting for a project to maintain and repair the entire surrounding area, including the construction of changing rooms, with the approval of the former Minister for the Sea, Abraão Vicente, but no further progress has been made.
“the action on Saturday will be like a liberation of people's spirits, because at the moment there is a political oppression that is crushing the citizenry, “ said António Pedro Silva, with the idea that the choice of 5 July was “'not for nothing”'.

Praia, Jul 8 (Inforpress) - The United States of America (USA) has reduced the validity of non-immigrant visas for Cape Verdean citizens to three months and a single entry, a measure that came into force on 07 July this year.
The decision, communicated by the US Embassy in Praia, aims to "detect and prevent abuses in the immigration system".
Previously, visas for Cape Verdeans were valid for five years with multiple entries.
The US Embassy justified this change with executive order 14161, emphasising that the visa reciprocity policy is continually reviewed and can be changed at any time by the US State Department.
