Porto Novo, 6 August (Inforpress) – The Terrimar Environmental Association today released figures on the sea turtle nesting season in Santo Antão up to 31 July, showing “significant results” in the protection of sea turtles on the island.

According to the organisation, which has been working for 15 years to protect sea turtles on the island of Santo Antão, 486 nests, 598 tracks, 18 tagged turtles and one turtle killed had been recorded by 31 July.

Terrimar reported that, thanks to the dedicated work of its team, volunteers and local communities, the results of the sea turtle conservation campaign so far have been positive, whilst noting that threats such as illegal hunting, excessive lighting on beaches and human activity still remain.

This environmental organisation has pledged to continue monitoring the beaches of Santo Antão throughout the entire nesting season, raising awareness and protecting sea turtles.
