Praia, 12 Jun (Inforpress) - José Maria Neves, President of the Republic, said today that the former Campo de Concentração do Tarrafal (Tarrafal Concentration Camp) is an element of Cabo Verde's contemporary political history and should therefore be preserved as a place of memory.

‘O Campo de Morte Lenta do Tarrafal (The Tarrafal Slow Death Camp) is definitely a very important heritage site for Cabo Verde, Portugal, Angola, Guinea-Bissau and the entire Lusophone world,’ said the head of state.

José Maria Neves made these remarks to the press on the sidelines of his meeting with the Minister for Culture and Creative Industries, Augusto Veiga, who officially presented him with the documentation for the Tarrafal Concentration Camp's application to become a Unesco World Heritage Site.

On that occasion, the president invited President Neves to join the Commission of Honour of this ‘important initiative’.
