Lisbon, July 28 (Inforpress) – A group of Cape Verdean immigrants living in Portugal is finalizing the creation of the Tabanca Association in the Diaspora, aiming to promote and promote this cultural manifestation, which is also a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The information was given today to Inforpress by the mentor of the “Tabanca na Diáspora” project, Cristina Tavares, recalling that they started “playing tabanca” in 2019, on the occasion of the São João festival, celebrated on June 24, in Palha Carga, municipality of Santa Catarina, Cabo Verde.

After a break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the project was resumed and in 2024, in addition to the feast of São João, they celebrated in January the feast of São Gonçalo, patron saint of the town of Ribeira Acima, in Santa Catarina.

Cristina Tavares, a native of Palha Carga and granddaughter of one of the founders of the village in that location, confessed that, despite having traveled to Portugal at the age of 15, her connection to the village never faded.
