Praia, Jan 19 (Inforpress) – Legislative elections will be held on May 17 and presidential elections on November 15, the President of the Republic announced today following a meeting of the Council of the Republic, the consultative body of the Head of State.
In his address, José Maria Neves argued that setting election dates is a constitutional imperative and that elections must be scheduled 30 days before the end of the legislature and up to 30 days after its conclusion.
“The National Assembly was constituted on May 19, and under the Constitution and the Electoral Law, elections must take place between April 19 and June 19. Having consulted all political parties registered with the Constitutional Court, the MpD, (…) and convened the Council of the Republic, (…) and after weighing all elements, namely religious festivities and population mobility, (…) I decided to indicate the following dates for the legislative and presidential elections,” declared the President of the Republic.
The same source stated that legislative elections will be held on May 17 and presidential elections on November 15, with the possibility of a second round on November 29.
