Praia, 06 May (Inforpress) -- The Minister of Health, Jorge Figueiredo, stressed today that Cabo Verde has seen a ‘significant evolution’ in the health sector over the last 50 years, with ‘visible improvements’ in human resources, infrastructure, diagnoses and life expectancy.

The statement was made in an interview with Inforpress, in which he discussed the sector's gains since independence.

He pointed out that in 1975 there were between eight and ten doctors and around 30 nurses in the country, which contrasts with around 500 doctors and a thousand nurses today.

‘We have technicians from the various areas of health, namely pharmacy, psychology, physiotherapy, social care, sociologists and specialists in the various areas of medicine, such as oncology, surgery, gynaecology, paediatrics, neurosurgery and neurology,’ he pointed out, noting that practically in these areas there has been a ‘great improvement’ in the last 12 or 15 years, which he described as ‘significant transformations’.
