Praia, January 26 (Inforpress) – Social communication is a “fundamental pillar” in democracy, to “mitigate the impacts of disinformation”, especially in a regional context marked by “political challenges, security and social instability”, declared today the representative of ECOWAS in Cabo Verde.

"The media are today one of the cornerstones of any thriving democracy, because they shape public discourse, inform citizens and hold institutions accountable," added Kelly Lopes.

The same source was speaking in Praia, on the sidelines of a two-day workshop on information integrity and the fight against disinformation—false, incorrect, and biased information—in West Africa, held at the Pérola Hotel.

According to the representative of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in CaboVerde, disinformation and fake news represent "real threats" to public trust, democratic processes, and sustainable development, requiring a "collective response" based on ethics, professionalism, and responsibility.
