Brava: Increase in Guinea Fowl Population Forces Farmers to Delay Sowing

Nova Sintra, 29 July (Inforpress) – Some farmers on the island of Brava have already started sowing, but most prefer to wait for the first rains, claiming that the large number of junglefowl poses a serious risk to seeds sown on dry land.

During a tour carried out by Inforpress in various parts of the municipality, it was observed that some farmers had already sown their seeds, particularly on land situated close to their homes, where these birds are less frequently seen.

Farmer João da Rocha explained that he had decided to postpone the start of sowing until the first rains arrived, due to the high number of junglefowl currently on the island.

‘This weed is very widespread in Brava, and if we sow the seeds now, the chickens will end up eating them all. I’ve seen some people preparing and tilling the land, but I think it’s very risky,’ he said.
