Praia, 26 January (Inforpress) – Today, in Praia, Guinean economist Carlos Lopes received the first edition of the Amílcar Cabral Award, established by the University of Cabo Verde (Uni-CV) to recognise intellectual contributions to the thinking of the independence leader.
Speaking to the press, the development expert said he felt ‘honoured’ by the distinction, which he considered recognition of his career and efforts to analyse Cabral as an ‘original thinker’ with effective proposals for the transformation of the African continent.
‘Cabral's main objective was the issue of self-determination and dignity for all peoples,’ analysed Carlos Lopes, arguing that it is necessary to return to universal principles in order to dignify human beings in the current context.
On the sidelines of the ceremony, Carlos Lopes gave a lecture entitled ‘Africa and the end of multilateral certainties’, in which he argued that the African continent should follow ‘an alternative path’ and not necessarily continue to invest in international institutional mechanisms that, historically, ‘have not served it well’.
