Boa Vista: NGOs register more than 35,000 turtle nests and release more than 27,000 hatchlings in September

Sal Rei, Oct 5 (Inforpress) – Turtle conservation NGOs in Boa Vista today released a “highly positive” report on the work carried out in September, with the registration of more than 35,000 nests and 27,000 hatchlings returned to the ocean.

The nesting season is nearing its end, but the month's results were high, according to data provided by Cabo Verde Natura 2000, BIOS.CV and Fundação Tartaruga.

The highlight of September was the hatching phase, with BIOS.CV leading the way by recording the birth and release of 19,432 baby turtles. Cabo Verde Natura 2000 added another 8,339 released hatchlings, bringing the exact number of births recorded to 27,771 between the two organizations.

As for reproductive activity, the joint effort resulted in the monitoring of more than 35,000 nests on the island's beaches, with 16,721 registered by Cabo Verde Natura 2000, 9,737 by BIOS.CV and 8,607 by Fundação Tartaruga.
