Santiago Norte: Today marks the 28th anniversary of the creation of the municipality of São Miguel

Calheta, 29 Sep (Inforpress) – The municipality of São Miguel, in the interior of Santiago, celebrates its 28th anniversary today, a date that coincides with the festivities in honor of the patron saint São Miguel the Archangel.

Created in 1996, under law no. 11/V/96, of November 11, São Miguel was previously a parish of Santa Catarina and, later, integrated the municipality of Tarrafal until its elevation to the category of municipality, with administrative headquarters in the city of Calheta.

Currently, according to data from the 2021 Census by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), São Miguel has 12,966 inhabitants, of which 47.2 percent are male and 52.8 percent are female. This population represents 4.7 percent of the total population on the island of Santiago and 2.6 percent nationwide.

With an area of 77.5 square kilometers, the municipality is characterized by its rural matrix and borders Tarrafal to the north, Santa Catarina to the south and west, Santa Cruz to the southeast and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.
