Praia, 4 September (Inforpress) – The construction of the Freedom and Democracy Monument in Praia has been a source of contention among Cape Verdeans, with the opposition questioning the appropriateness of the investment and the government defending its continuation.
While opposition parties are unanimous in contesting the £150 million ‘expenditure’ due to the ‘chaotic situation’ the country is going through, the party that supports the government defends the importance of the project.
After hearing from the political parties, Inforpress spoke with some members of civil society.
The founder of the Movement for Democracy (MpD, ruling party), António do Espírito Santo, advocates a ‘moratorium’ on the construction of the monument, arguing that the current situation calls for a more cautious use of public funds, especially given the difficulties in inter-island air connections.
