São Vicente/ Rains: UCID councillor accuses City Council and Government of ‘slowness and inertia’ in responses

Mindelo, 1 September (Inforpress) – The councillor for the Independent and Democratic Cape Verdean Union (UCID) criticised the São Vicente City Council and the Government for their ‘slowness and inertia’ in responding to the damage caused by the rains, which could have been ‘much better’, 21 days after the event.

At a press conference today in Mindelo, António Monteiro pointed out that even after all these days, there are still open sewers and hundreds of people with homes that are ‘terribly damaged’ and flooded inside, a situation that, in his view, could be better.

‘And it is not [better] because the Government, the central power, is reacting extremely slowly,’ said the same source, who believes it is high time for the Prime Minister to make his ‘clear position’ known regarding measures to revive São Vicente.

Referring to the lack of equipment and piles of earth that still remain unremoved, the UCID councillor also accused the city council of ‘inertia and sluggishness’, when the president said there were 2,500 workers on the ground, who, he stressed, ‘are not being seen’.
