Praia, Aug 22 (Inforpress) – The Cape Verdean Swimming Team has stood out at the Junior World Swimming Championships in Otopeni, Romania, by achieving new national and personal records, despite modest positions in the overall classification.
According to the secretary of the Cape Verdean Swimming Federation (Fecan), Enrique Alhinho, who told Inforpress, swimmer Matteo Carvalho competed in the 200-meter freestyle and finished the race in 2 minutes and 28 seconds, six seconds less than his best time, finishing in 107th place.
In the mixed relay, the national junior team broke the previous national record by six seconds, completing the race in 4 minutes and 51 seconds, compared to the 4:57 set in April in Egypt.
Despite finishing second to last, the manager highlighted the importance of the achievement.
"We finished second to last in the relay, but we broke the national junior record. I think it's a great achievement, because whenever we achieve a personal best, it's a cause for celebration," said Enrique Alhinho.
