Mindelo, 13 Jun (Inforpress) - The Movement for Democracy (MpD, ruling party) today denied, in a political statement in Parliament, that the massive emigration of young Cape Verdeans abroad is a sign of the country's collapse and bankruptcy, as the opposition claims.
Abraão Vicente, the deputy who made the political statement, used statistics to say that the country is ‘doing well’ and that young people are going abroad to ‘take Cabo Verde further’ and that they will ‘come back stronger’.
According to Abraão Vicente, in 2024 Cabo Verde recorded the ‘highest tax revenues in its history’, or more than 56.5 billion escudos. He also noted a ‘historic increase’ in the employment rate, with 8,453 more people employed, many of them young people, and that the social security base was broadened with more young people contributing, which brought more confidence to the system, which is why he sees emigration as a strategic mobility.
"The government led by Ulisses Correia e Silva has opened up paths, such as the CPLP Mobility Agreement, which transforms emigration into strategic mobility. The opposition calls this a escape? We call it recognition, excellence," he said, emphasising that when a young Cape Verdean is recruited by a multinational, it's not abandonment, but affirmation.
