Ribeira Grande, Apr 8 (Inforpress) - Residents of Penha de França, Ribeira Grande, Santo Antão, today denounced the authorities' "negligence" in relation to sanitation and environmental preservation, warning of the serious health and well-being problems affecting the community due to "negligence".
The communal septic tank that overflows and sends waste into the sea, the nauseating smell caused by the septic tank, the burning of toxic waste in Praia Pequena, below the Penha de França community, and the dumping of construction material waste are some of the main complaints, which, according to residents, have been “systematically ignored” by the authorities.
Antônio Lima, a resident of Penha de França, reported that for several years he has been living with the authorities’ “neglect” regarding the environment and sanitation.
“Penha de França has a communal septic tank that frequently overflows and the waste ends up being dumped into the sea. The nauseating smell is constant and permeates the environment. There is not a day that goes by that we do not smell this horrible odor coming from the septic tank,” he said.
