São Nicolau: Identification of Omura’s whale opens up new avenues for scientific research – researcher

Tarrafal, 30 July (Inforpress) – The identification of the Omura’s whale in Cape Verdean waters opens up new prospects for scientific research into the species and could boost the blue economy, researcher José Cabral argued on Wednesday.

Speaking to Inforpress during a presentation on the importance of the southern region of the island of São Nicolau for whale conservation, José Cabral stated that the discovery represents a milestone for science and for our understanding of the country’s marine biodiversity.

The researcher said that he is currently working with other experts on a scientific study that will be presented at a later date, and reiterated the need to strengthen the protection of whales in Cabo Verde.

As he explained, the identification of this species represents a significant contribution to global knowledge of cetaceans, bringing the total number of species recorded in Cabo Verde’s waters to 27.
