Fisherman’s Day: Association warns of fishing challenges and plastic pollution in the marine environment

Praia, Feb 05 (Inforpress) – The president of the Association of Fishermen and Fishmongers of Achada Grande Trás and São Tomé (APPAST), Alberto Tavares, today warned of the growing presence of solid waste in the sea, particularly plastic pollution.

He was speaking as part of the celebrations of National Fisherman’s Day, marked today, during a discussion organised by APPAST dedicated to the issue of plastic pollution in marine and terrestrial environments.

On the occasion, the association leader highlighted the main challenges faced by the fishing community, stressing the need to strengthen environmental awareness.

According to him, much of the waste found in the sea results from improper disposal of rubbish on the streets, which is then carried into the ocean by wind and flooding.
