“We do not want to have a parity law that is a dead letter, but impactful” – President of ICIEG

Praia, Oct 24 (Inforpress) – The president of the Cabo Verdean Institute for Gender Equality and Equity (ICIEG) said the institution works “hard” with different social actors so that the parity law is not “letter- dead” but“ impactful”.

Rosana Almeida, who was speaking to journalists on Wednesday outside the capacity building of Public Administration staff and members of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Gender Approach on gender parity and development, said ICIEG and partners are seeking consensus and mechanisms for, in fact, the law to pass.

All this, she explained, so that the issue of parity will not be an obligation, causing political parties to consider the issue of women’s access to office.

“We will set foot on the 40 percent (%) which is the threshold of the parity law,” she said, stressing that “without the 40% there is no parity”. According to Rosana Almeida, it is “fundamental” to continue the wave of empowerment.
