São Filipe, Oct 31 (Inforpress) – The “Vitó Project” has an agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAA) to carry out a study focused at the conservation of the “Chinel” reptile (Chioninia vaillantiii xanthotis), a subspecies that exists only in Fogo and Ilhéu de Cima.
The project manager for the preservation and conservation of turtles and seabirds in Fogo Island and Ilheus Rombo and Seco, “Vitó Project”, Herculano Diniz, told Inforpress that the plan aims to conserve Chinel, known as “lizard”, which only exists in the two regions (Fogo and Ilhéu de Cima). For this purpose, the MAA, through the National Directorate of Environment (DNA), made available to this organization 800.000 escudos for the first study.
The study will be developed in collaboration with the National Directorate of Environment (DNA) and in partnership with Portuguese researchers, and the idea, explains the biologist Herculano Diniz, is to follow up the population, monitor and identify their distribution, (Ilhéu de Cima) to know its basic biology and to forecast the main conservation actions of this species.
According to him, until this moment not much is known about the Chinel and it is intended with this project to develop the first actions of conservation, indicating that the number of its population is unknown and the threats, since this will be the first study to be carried out for the collection of data concerning both its distribution and its characteristics.
