Praia, Jul 30 (Inforpress) – The secretary general of the National Union of Cabo Verdean Workers – Central Union (UNTC-CS), Joaquina Almeida, accuses Cabo Verde’s private security company, DB Protect, of practices that, in her perspective, resemble “slave labour”.
In a conversation with Inforpress, about the employment situation in Cabo Verde, Joaquina Almeida pointed out several cases that, according to her, demonstrate that the situation is “not good”, and accused the DB Protect company in a particular way, which, as she said, has explored the workers and then prohibits them from joining unions.
“DB Protect is a company that practices jobs that resemble slave labour. There are workers who work 11 additional hours a day, workers without the right to a shift allowance, without holidays and without weekly breaks,” said the union leader.
Joaquina Almeida adds that several complaints have already been made in the Labour Court against this company and informed that even on the July 23 there was a trial against the same company for violation of workers’ rights.
