Unemployment in Cabo Verde increased from 12.4% in 2015 to 15% in 2016 – INE

Praia, March 31 (Inforpress) – The unemployment rate in Cabo Verde has increased by 2.6 percentage points, from 12.4% in 2015 to 15% in 2016, with Praia being the municipality with the most unemployed people, i.e. 22.1%.

According to data from the Employment and Labor Market Statistics of 2016 presented by the National Statistical Institute (INE) at Praia City, the unemployment in men went from 13.5% to 12.9%, while in women increased from 11.2% to 17.4%.

Active people employed in 2016 were 209.725 (194.485 in 2015) and of these, 36.955 are unemployed (15%) compared to 27.599 in 2015 (12.4%) and 140.467 inactive, and the young people between 15 and 24 years old represent a rate of 41% of the unemployed population and between 15 and 34 years are 24.2% of the unemployed population.

In the urban area the unemployment rate is higher, taking into account that it increased by 2.7 percentage points, that is, from 14.2% in 2015 to 16.9% in 2016, and in rural areas went from 7.9% To 10.3%. But the country’s capital is the most affected by unemployment, having increased by 6.4 percentage points from 2015 to 2016, i.e. from 15.7% to 22.1%.
