Mindelo, April 18 (Inforpress) – The president of UCID today gave the “benefit of the doubt” to the Government’s measure on visa waiver to citizens from European Union and the United Kingdomin to entry in force in Cabo Verde from May.
Antonio Monteiro, leader of the Cabo Verdean Independent and Democratic Union (UCID, opposition party), said in a press conference in Mindelo that for now he should not “penalize the Government” with this position, although he understands that the “revenue lost” with no visas – “about 1.8 million contos” – “is very much needed” to the country.
The UCID, added the same source, understands that the visa waiver is a “secondary measure”, since the party focuses on “more important” issues for the people such as job creation, social welfare and economic growth.
“If the Government understands that this measure opens up a wider range to attract more tourists and more investors and provides a currency of exchange for what is intended by this Government, the possibility of Cabo Verdeans being able to emigrate to Europe without visa requirements”, said Antonio Monteiro, then this is a “sensible and good” measure for the country.
