This Thursday’s earthquake is the highest recorded so far in the country – geophysicist

Mindelo, Jan 27 (Inforpress) – The earthquake that hit the islands of Santo Antão and São Vicente at dawn this Thursday is the “highest magnitude” recorded so far in Cape Verde and likely related to a volcanic process.

The geophysicist of the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INMG), in São Vicente, Bruno Faria advanced this information, assuring that the earthquake happened at 03:16 and with the epicenter located 20 kilometers southwest of the coast of Monte Trigo, in Santo Antão.

The earthquake, according to the same source, had a magnitude of 5.1 with the epicenter recorded in an eruptive field discovered in 2005.

“It is very likely that this event is related to volcanic processes”, explained the geophysicist, confirming that it was the “highest magnitude” earthquake recorded in Cape Verde and was due to the “increase in accumulated energy”.
