Praia, Aug 21 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, considered that the fight against alcoholism in Cabo Verde is a “marathon race” and a “tough fight”.
“The fight against alcoholism in Cabo Verde is a marathon race, not a 100 or 200 meter race. And it is a very difficult fight”, defended the President of the Republic, arguing that there are ingrained habits and culture of alcohol consumption“ for everything and nothing”.
“A soccer team wins, we celebrate with alcohol, we baptize a child, we celebrate with alcohol, we get married, we mark the wedding with alcohol, we have a defeat, we enjoy the hurt with alcohol. Even at funerals we sometimes have a tradition of using alcohol,” added Jorge Carlos Fonseca, in remarks to the press on Monday, 19, in Praia.
However, the Head of State acknowledged, there has been “huge progress” in combating alcohol abuse, and, for example, he said, the “Less Alcohol, More Life” campaign has led to political consensus for the recent Parliament’s approval of the Alcohol Act.
