Praia, Jun 15 (Inforpress) – The president of the SimaJúlia Foundation argued that the problem of violence against the elderly requires a “strong engagement” of all, stating that they are a human library and builders of Cabo Verdean society that deserve to be loved and valued.
Teresa Mascarenhas made this statement in an interview with Inforpress, about the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, marked on June 15, and considered it “important” that civil society unite in promoting a reflection on the importance of care and protection and fight against age discrimination.
“We have left care for the elderly to act later with justifications of lack of time, but we need to question, try to know what is the day-to-day of the elderly, their difficulties and needs. We need to recognize everything they have done for us and today we have to do everything for them,” he said, stressing that society needs to redeem values and principles.
According to this responsible, the situation of the elderly is often considered as “complicated”, because the focus has been placed most often on children who symbolize the future of a society and the elderly who are builders of society have not deserved due attention on the part of society.
