Suicide is first cause of death from external causes in Cabo Verde – INSP

Ribeira Grande, Oct 11 (Inforpress) – Suicide is the leading cause of death from external causes in Cabo Verde with a record of about 50 deaths a year, the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) said today in a statement.

This has caused a great deal of suffering and disruption to families who, according to a document issued on the occasion of World Mental Health Day on October 10, “often find it difficult to cope with.”

“Suicide prevention” was the theme proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) for this year’s commemoration, with the aim of “attracting the attention of governments so that the issue can take priority on public health agendas around the world.”

The INSP says that “each suicide is a tragedy that affects families and communities and has lasting effects on people left behind” and points to suicide as “a global public health problem that deserves the attention of all health actors, including scientific and professional organizations, universities, organizations working with mental health, media, families and communities.
