Study reveals that expenditure arising from the area of sickness and maternity increased 9%

Praia, Sep 28 (Inforpress) – The National Institute of Social Security (INPS) spends about 3 billion escudos annually in the area of sickness and maternity, an increase of 9%, while revenues grow only 6%, revealed today a study.

Prepared by INPS in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Study on the Health and Maternity Sector, presented this morning in Praia, also concluded that there is a tendency for expenditure growth to exceed revenues.

According to the president of the INPS executive committee, Orlanda Ferreira, this is a “worrying” situation which has been “increasing year after year” in the area of sickness and maternity.

“The costs in the area of sickness have been growing around 9% annually, and the revenues allocated to this sector grow around 6%, and the costs in terms of values is about 3 billion escudos and there is a tendency of expenditure to exceed revenue growth”, pointed out the responsible.

Orlanda Ferreira also said that 8% of what the worker or employer participates in the INPS is destined for health and maternity care and the costs with growth are related to transport, stay and medication expenses.
