São Vicente / Life in the dumpster: “It was the trash that gave me everything I have so far” – Joana da Cruz

Mindelo, May 10 (Inforpress) – Joana da Cruz is one of many Mindelo citizen seeking daily sustenance in the municipal dump of São Vicente, who helped her raise her five children and have everything she has so far.

Three kilometers from the city of Mindelo, the municipal dump, in Ribeira Julião, keeps a scenario that, for sure, many people in São Vicente do not know. Beside the garbage, coming from all the corner of the island, is a human part that lives together with the rubble daily, and from there takes the daily bread, be they men, women, children and young people of various names and with different reasons for this “luck”.

Therefore, there could be several stories to be told here, but Inforpress reports of Joana da Cruz, 52 years old, born in Santo Antão, who came to São Vicente at the age of 13 along with her mother.

With a “difficult life”, this Santo Antao citizen, who now has more years in Mindelo, told that from an early age began to go with her mother to the dump in search of something to “get by and feed hungry” and from there I never left.
