São Vicente: Expert calls for transformation in education and governance towards ocean literacy for citizenship

Mindelo, Nov 24 (Inforpress) – The academic Maria Miguel Estrela considered today, in Mindelo, the strategy to integrate ocean literacy in citizenship education goes through a transformation of co-management and co-responsibility in education and governance.

During the first panel of the fourth Day of Cabo Verde Ocean Week, this morning in São Vicente, precisely on ocean literacy in citizenship education, Estrela realized that the transformation in education aims to “know more” and have an action based on that knowledge, and, in governance, not to be waiting for policy makers to issue laws and then “see if we comply or not”, she said.

“The populations living in coastal areas, the people who are in their day-to-day even if away from the sea have to participate in the definition of policies, in decision-making,” she said.

Moreover, according to the same source, everything in this issue of literacy should start in school, but also by non-formal education, that is, outside of school, because people “only like and take care” of what they know well.
