Mindelo, June 8 (Inforpress) – The NGO Biosphere I announced today in Mindelo the launch of the “largest project ever undertaken” in terms of sustainable management towards the Santa Luzia and Branco and Raso Islanders Marine Reserve, with a scheduled duration of three years.
The announcement was made by the President of Biosphere I, Tommy Melo, on the day the World Oceans Day is celebrated, indicating that the project is funded by an international foundation with headquarters in Switzerland, MAVA, in the amount of about 150 million escudos.
The project, which counts on the participation of national and international partners, among them the National Directorate of the Environment, universities and fishing communities, among others, will be based on six activity axes, the first of which aims at the control of invasive species, such as cats and rats in the reserve, responsible over time for the depletion of native fauna, leading, according to Tommy Melo, to the extinction of some species.
The reintroduction and recovery of some of these “fragile or even extinct” species, the monitoring and scientific monitoring of fauna and the implementation of reserve control activities are other axes of the project.
