Mindelo, Aug 11 (Inforpress) – The UCID leader said Tuesday that the pretrial detention of Amadeu Oliveira was excessive and a revenge of the courts for trying to silence him, but hopes the appeal lodged to Constitutional Court has a different answer.
The president of the Independent and Democratic Cabo Verdean Union (UCID), who was speaking at a press conference at the party’s office in Mindelo, said the pretrial detention of the MP Amadeu Oliveira, who is accused of being charged with an attack on the democratic rule of law “was an attempt to incarcerate him, to bring him to his knees and silence an uncomfortable voice against injustice” in Cabo Verde.
According to António Monteiro, “it was excessive the Court of Appeals of Barlavento and the Supreme Court of Justice consider the mere fact the Standing Committee of the National Assembly authorized, with the vote of Amadeu Oliveira himself, to raise immunity was a crime confession”.
For the UCID’s leader, the Standing Committee acted “just to give the justice the opportunity to clarify the situation”. This is because the Committee “could have worked in the other direction and failed because it did not scrupulously comply with what the rules of procedure of the National Assembly provides.”
