Santo Antão: Municipalities are engaged in seeking financing for the island’s landfill – Mayor

Porto Novo, Oct 11  (Inforpress) – The municipalities of Santo Antão are engaged in in seeking financing, together with the Government, for the installation of the island’s landfill  which faces an extremely difficult situation regarding the collection and waste management.

Who said that was the mayor of Porto Novo, Anibal Fonseca, for whom the landfill is a Government project, but the municipalities in Santo Antão are engaged in the mobilization of partnerships to implement this infrastructure, which can cost around 200 million escudos.

“It is a project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, but we are also committed for its implementation,” said the mayor, who admitted that, for the costs it represents, it is “a project for later”, despite the “serious problems” Santo Antão faces in this regard.

The problem of collection, management and treatment of solid waste in Santo Antão is more serious in the municipalities of Paul and Ribeira Grande, who have been depositing the garbage produced in the inter-municipal wastebasket of Ribeira Brava (border between Paul and Porto Novo), a space that, in addition to the “bad image” it is bringing to this island, is becoming a public health problem.
