Porto Novo, May 5 (Inforpress) – The ban imposed in 1984 on the agricultural products of Santo Antao, due to millipedes plague is “choking” the Santo Antão farmers, who insist on the need for the Government to lift “without any restrictions” the ban.
In accordance to the agricultural producer Amilcar Lima, in Porto Novo, in many valleys, especially in this county, the agriculture particularly horticulture is gaining “a great momentum” thanks to investments made in the last years in the mobilization of water, but in his view “the ban continues to strangle farmers.”
“Agriculture is moving forward. Only the lifting of the embargo, which is suffocating the farmers” said Amílcar Lima, who urged the Government to put an end to this measure, which restricts the circulation of agricultural products of Santo Antao in national markets.
In 2013, the Government, with the start-up of the purge center of Porto Novo and the training of 30 inspectors lift partially lift the embargo, restricting the export of surpluses only to the emerging tourist merchants of Boa Vista and Sal .
