Santiago: Santa Catarina hosts celebrations of Cabo Verdean Fisherman’s Day

Assomada, Jan 28 (Inforpress) – The Santa Catarina county hosts this year the official commemorations of the Cabo Verdean Fisherman’s Day in Santiago, with debate, cultural animation, nautical activities and a meeting of fishermen and fishmongers from all over the island.

Under the theme “With the fishermen,  for the development”, this eighth meeting of fishermen and fishmongers in Santiago aims to promote the fishing sector, raise awareness among fishermen and fishmongers in relation to environmental issues, make public the strategic and public policies for the development of the sector, as well as the exchange of experiences among participants.

According to a note from the City Hall of Santa Catarina, the municipality hosting the celebrations, at the invitation of the National Institute of Fisheries Development (INDP), will take the activities to the two fishing zones, mainly Rincão and Ribeira da Barca.

Thus, on February 2 and 3, Rincão hosts the Gastronomy Fair of the Sea, with dishes from the local gastronomy, a debate on “Fishing, Tourism, Environment and Development – paths towards the future” and another one on “Policies Competitiveness and Strategies for the Development of the Sector”. On February 5, Cabo Verdean Fisherman’s Day, the town of Ribeira da Barca hosts a meeting and open discussion with the fishermen and fishmongers from Santiago Island, which will be attended by the Secretary of State for Maritime Economy, Paulo Veiga.
