Santa Catarina: Assomada has grown and remains an important city – President of the Republic

Assomada, May 11 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic recognized the growth of the Assomada, which marks this Friday, the 13th, the 21 years of elevation to the category of city, stating that it remains an “important city” for the country.

José Maria Neves, who began his first official three-day visit to the municipality of Santa Catarina on Tuesday, recalled in remarks to journalists that Assomada was the first village to be elevated to the category of city after the independence of Cabo Verde, that is, almost 80 years after the creation of the last city in the country.

The village of Assomada, subdivided into 22 neighborhoods, which was elevated to the category of city, through Decree-law 7/2001, of March 26, in the opinion of the President of the Republic this has happened to “do justice to Santa Catarina and North Santiago”.

“Over the course of 21 years Assomada has grown into a real city. It was not evident that in 2001, it had all the conditions to be a city, but, city is something that is built every day. Assomada has a great political, economic, social and cultural importance on the Santiago Island and Cabo Verde,” the Head of State said.
