Praia, Sep 14 (Inforpress) – The community of São Francisco is aware of environmental protection, thanks to the “Ekonatura” project, which transforms glass and plastic bottles into raw materials for construction and beauty products.
For this small town, located 10 minutes from the city of Praia, east of the capital, with just over a thousand inhabitants (2010 census), small actions such as the collection of glass and plastic bottles have a special significance, as they not only prevent this solid waste from being transported to landfill sites, but also ensure that this “rubbish” has an impact on its people and communities.
Ekonatura, according to its director João Ferreira, was born in 2019 as part of a partnership with the University of Cape Verde (UNI-CV), Eco-CV, Raiz Azul and the São Francisco Community Association, of which he is president, and aims to reduce the environmental impact caused by solid urban waste, particularly plastic.
Discarded plastics and glass are given a new destination and a new environmental image to the land of Codé di Dona, the mythical harmonica player, referred to as the “Father of Funaná”.
