Rotary Club of Praia delivers 521 books to Amor de Deus School for the massification of reading.

Cidade da Praia, 04 May 2010 (Inforpress) – The Amor de Deus Secondary School has received this Thursday, a donation of 521 textbooks delivered by the Rotary Club of Praia, aimed at strengthening and improving the bibliographic collection, whose objective is based on the massification of reading in schools.

According to the president of the club’s board, José Rebelo, the act, which took place during the visit of the governor of Rotary International District 9101 to learn about the functioning of clubs in Cabo  Verde, is part of the humanitarian projects developed in partnership with the Rotary Club of Ponte da Barca in Portugal, aiming to stimulate reading and education programmes in the communities.

The first installment, he recalled, was delivered to the penitentiary services for the reinsertion of prisoners in February this year, clarifying that the intention is to contribute to the National Reading Plan and increase the possibility “of people who are unable to acquire books on the market” .

As he explained, this project benefits from “multiple lines of orientation”, especially in terms of inmates’ schooling, as “a good number of them leave school very early”, with the perspective that after finishing their sentences they will be better qualified to be inserted in society, thus avoiding a return to the penitentiary systems.
