Press Freedom: AJOC blames Public Prosecutor ‘s Office for the Cabo Verde fall nine positions in the world rankings

Praia, May 4 (Inforpress) – The president of the Cabo Verde Journalists’ Trade Union Association (AJOC) said on Tuesday that the archipelago fall nine positions in the World ranking of Press Freedom worries the association and blamed the Public Prosecutor ‘s Office (MP).

Geremias Furtado expressed his concern in statements to the press, on the sidelines of the national conference to celebrate the World Press Freedom Day, with the central motto “Journalism under Surveillance” and as the theme “More Freedom and Better Democracy”, which was held by the Regulatory Authority for the Media (ARC), in partnership with the Cabo Verde National Commission for UNESCO and the AJOC.

“I don’t remember to see Cabo Verde go down so much like this in this important ranking, we are in free fall because we had already dropped two positions in the ranking last year and this year we went down nine other, we believe that all this is related to situations recently affected the media environment in Cabo Verde”, said, the president of AJOC.

The reasons for the fall of Cabo Verde in the aforementioned ranking by Reporters Without Borders, according to this responsible, have to do with the recent situations in which journalists were notified to appear before the Public Prosecutor’s Office, for having disclosed information related to procedings under confidentiality of judicial investigations.
