President of the Republic urges Government to “look more” at islands with fewer development opportunities

Porto Novo, Jun 7 (Inforpress) – The Government should “look more” at islands with less development opportunities, such as Santo Antão, where it “must invest more” in rural areas, with a view to “empowering” populations.

The conclusion came from the President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, for whom the idea is that there are “two Cabo Verde”, one that has been developing, formed by the cities of Praia and Mindelo and the islands of Sal and Boa Vista, and another one “poorer, with fewer opportunities”.

“We have islands, such as Santo Antão, São Nicolau and Brava, but also in the countryside of Santiago, where development is weaker, where people live with many difficulties, with problems of water supply, lack of access (roads), without air link and maritime connections”, noted Jorge Carlos Fonseca, who today concludes a week-long visit to Santo Antão.

The Head of State, who spoke on Thursday, 6th, at a meeting with the community of Lagoa da Ribeira das Patas, in the countryside of Porto Novo, defended the need to “think Cabo Verde” as a country “more together, more solidarity and with a balanced development”.
