President of the Republic decides to ponder for few days before setting the election date

Praia, Dec 29 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, decided to ponder for few days before setting the dates for the 2021 legislative and presidential elections, in compliance with constitutional and legal rules.

The dates should be communicated this Monday, at the end of the meeting of the Council of the Republic or at the latest until this Tuesday or Wednesday, but Jorge Carlos Fonseca said that after hearing the councilors, “who presented different positions”, decided consider “a little more”, so the announcement of dates should only happen later.

Legislative elections must take place between 30 days before and 30 days after the end of the term of MPs, which means that theoretically they must take place between March 21 to May 20, 2021.

On the other hand, Jorge Carlos Fonseca pointed out, there are rules in the Electoral Code indicating that presidential elections, both the first and a possible second round, must take place between the 40th and 25th day at the end of the current president’s term.
