São Filipe, Sep 6 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, today condemned the military intervention in Guinea-Conakry, appealing for constitutional normality.
In a first comment on the situation, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, who is visiting the island of Fogo, said that “regardless of the ECOWAS consensus position, as a principle we condemn any kind of military intervention, and intervention in the manner of a coup because it goes against the rules in force in the country”.
According to him, “it is not a legitimate form of access and exercise of power”, which is why it deserves “our condemnation”, stressing that everything must be done so that the President of Guinea-Conakry and other political leaders have “dignified and humane treatment” and “they are released and not subjected to inadequate treatment”, and everything must be done so that “constitutional normality is replaced”.
Jorge Carlos Fonseca said he was monitoring the situation, indicating that a meeting of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers was planned for the 9th to analyze the institutional reform of ECOWAS and due to the situation in Guinea-Conakry it was canceled and an extraordinary summit of the Heads of States and government of ECOWAS was scheduled for the same day.
