Praia: UN-Habitat Cabo Verde defends better planning for the informal settlements

Praia, Sep 16  (Inforpress) – The head of UN-Habitat Cabo Verde, Mathias Spaliviero, defended this Tuesday a better urban and territorial planning of the municipality of Praia and a greater involvement of the population in the implementation of urban plans aiming improve informal settlements.

The senior official for Human Settlements and responsible for UN-Habitat Cabo Verde made these statements in an interview with Inforpress, stressing that the archipelago faces several challenges in terms of informal settlements, which are felt, mainly, during the rainy season.

Informal settlements in Cabo Verde, as in most countries, according to him, lack of an adequate legal and political framework, adding that local authorities must have strategies to guarantee basic services to the population.

The UN specialist also pointed out the importance of creating streets and opportunities for employment and income generation as some of the measures that can also be adopted in the creation of a safer and more sustainable city.
