Praia, May 3 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, today defended the need for the State to find solutions for the financing of private media bodies for the sake of plurality and democracy in Cabo Verde.
Jorge Carlos Fonseca spoke to journalists after presiding over the opening ceremony of the conference “Press Freedom and Censorship in the Digital Age” promoted by the Journalists Association of Cabo Verde (AJOC) to mark World Press Freedom Day, which today is celebrated.
According to the Head of State, in order to have an advanced democracy, which is wanted in Cabo Verde, it is necessary to have a free press and to be free it must be plural.
For this reason, he added that if the country focuses only on the public media, this can condition the plurality of sources of information.
“It is often said that the private should seek their own means of financing. This, theoretically, may be interesting, but in a country with the size of Cabo Verde can be complicated,” he said, stressing that it is important that the State also ensure, by its own means, the plurality of expression that is the nodule of democracy.
