PR suggests extending the term for judicial review of constitutionality of legal provisions

Praia, Jan 12 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, suggested Monday that, in the next constitutional review, the term for judicial review of constitutionality of legal provisions, submitted to the Head of State for promulgation, be extended.

Jorge Carlos Fonseca, who spoke at the presentation ceremony of the usual New Year greetings by the representation of the National Assembly to the President of the Republic, explained that in cases where many law proposals are submitted to the Presidency of the Republic, it is difficult to meet this deadline, which is currently eight days.

“When dozens law proposals are submitted at the same period, law proposals of the highest complexity, such as the amendment of the penal code and the code of penal procedure, imagine the bustle and some difficulties that may be incumbent on the President of the Republic,” he said.

Coincidentally, pointed out Jorge Carlos Fonseca, the situation is happening at this moment, since in the last days 2020, about three dozen law proposals were submitted the Presidency of the Republic, including amendments to the penal code and the code of penal procedure. For this very reason, he suggested that in an eventual amendment to the Constitution of the Republic, a small increase be made to that eight-day period, for a more adequate review of the law proposals.
