Praia, Jan 14 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic praised the positive growth of the economy and employment in the country, but recalled that the path, a source of pride for the Cabo Verdean people, cannot be “harmed” in any way.
Jorge Carlos Fonseca made this assessment in parliament at the solemn session commemorating Freedom and Democracy Day, which is marked on January 13 as a historic event by the first multiparty elections held in Cabo Verde in 1991.
“The most recent data show a positive evolution of the economy and employment in our country. Growth approaching 7% in the third quarter of 2019 is quite significant; accompanied by a reduction in unemployment reinforces the positive nature of these developments, especially when comparing these developments with the situation prevailing until 2016, taking into account the fact that this level was reached in the context of three consecutive years of drought,” he said.
Nevertheless, he warned that it was too early for the country to rejoice in the effects, as the level of growth achieved is still “insufficient”, and in his speech said that in order to reach high levels of economic and social development, the country would need two or three decades of double-digit economic growth (10% or more).
