Praia, Jan 14 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic defended this Thursday, the need to continue strengthening national institutions and deepen the exercise of freedoms, on the 30th anniversary on which Cabo Verdeans chose their rulers through the popular vote.
Jorge Carlos Fonseca defended this idea, when he delivered his speech at the special solemn commemorative session of January 13, Freedom and Democracy Day, considering that, despite the challenges to be overcome, the “most reliable indicator of the robustness” of Cabo Verdean democracy is the fact that the electoral processes have become a habitual but always important activity has allowed alternations and peaceful continuities in the different levels of power.
“Naturally, our democratic system faces important challenges. Our institutions must continue to be strengthened and the exercise of freedoms deepened, stressing that particular attention should be paid to justice, security and education, “a sector particularly dedicated to contributing to the appropriating of the ideals of democracy and freedom” .
According to the President of the Republic, political parties and civil society organizations, as well as the media, have a very important role, as they are essential instances in democratic systems, both in civic and political pedagogy and in the monitoring of the exercise of power in different bodies.
